Worship Guitar Lessons

Just about any successful, talented worship leader had to start somewhere, usually with those monotonous, weekly guitar lessons where the old man teacher assigned frustrating finger scales and boringly, repetitious songs to drill guitar skills into their head. Contrary to popular belief, the guy who stands up on stage every Sunday and leads worship wasn't just born that way. In fact, his skill came from many years of lessons and practice.

For people who want to learn how to play worship on the guitar, it should be noted that the skill doesn't come over night. Learning music fundamentals, chord progressions, and strumming patterns takes time. However, that is not to say that the effort is not worthwhile. Having the ability to lead worship on the guitar is an amazing, useful gift.

Worship guitar lessons will not have the same focus as classical guitar lessons.

A good guitar teacher typically will have students practice some basic classical songs to learn fingering and become familiar with note placement. However, after a student is comfortable with the guitar and understands the basics of music theory, the rest of the lesson time will be focused on learning chords and various worship songs.

When learning worship guitar, it is important to practice a variety of songs requiring different chords. It is unfortunate that the majority of worship leaders only know the four basic guitar chords and one strumming pattern. A skilled worship leader should have the ability to play dozens of songs using a wide selection of chords and a variety of strumming patterns.

As tempting as it is, don't get stuck in the routine of playing G, C, D, and Em while you play the five main songs you hear on the radio. Branch out, find every set of guitar tabs for worship songs you can find, and start practicing.

Worship guitar lessons are fundamental if you want to gain skill and become a talented worship leader. Don't despise the lesson or complain of their pointlessness. Gather everything you can from the lessons and appreciate the effort you put into learning how to play worship guitar.
